The Kerala High Court today stayed the forceful acquisition of private land for the proposed Smart City project at Kakkanad.

Justice T R Ramachandra Nair stayed the dispossession of land holding rights of Abdul Khader on his petition challenging the acquisition.

Khader submitted that the earlier notification and award of compensation had lapsed, and hence authorities cannot go on with the eviction proceedings.

Earlier, the government had decided to evict people from the project area by May 2, 2006. Challenging the same, the petitioner moved the court.

The government is acquiring land for the Smart City project to be developed with Dubai-based TECOM group. The agreement in this regard is expected to be signed this month.
