The Kerala government has urged the Centre to restore the slashed rice quota meant for the above poverty line (APL) category ration cardholders, an official press release said.
Food crisis in the state could be solved to some extent if the Centre supplies 'special rice quota at ration price' and restore fully the rice quota for the APL category, the release said.
The government has sanctioned Rs 56 crore to State Civil Supplies Corporation for taking steps to check price rise of essential commodities.
For the supply of rice through 'rice shops', the government is providing a subsidy of Rs 9 crore, Rs 34 crore for paddy procurement and Rs 13 crore for noon-meal to school children.
The rice allotted by the Centre for distribution in the open market at Rs 17 per kg is being supplied through corporation outlets at Rs 13 per kg. Sugar is sold at Rs 25 per kg as against the market price of Rs 35 per kg.
