A clutch of important Bills are listed for parliamentary business for the week beginning Monday. Many of them are just for introduction, while for some, the Standing Committees have given their directions and the government has to have them debated and passed.

The Budget session of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha ends on May 7. Given the disturbances in both houses over the past week, floor managers of the treasury department will have their task cut out, packing in all the slated agenda in a span of less than one working week.

Among the Bills the government has decided to introduce in the houses before the session ends includes the law underwriting the liability of private nuclear reactor builders in case of an accident. This is crucial for India’s relations with the US. This Bill is likely to be introduced without any changes in this session and will be referred to the Standing Committee.

In many cases, the Standing Committees to which many Bills were referred to have given their report and it will be a test of the abilities of the government’s floor managers whether these will be taken up, discussed and passed in the remaining one week of the session.

Others include the National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions (Amendment) Bill, 2009, the Labour Laws (Exemption from Furnishing Returns and Maintaining Registers by Certain Establishments) Amendment and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill, 2005(with the standing committee), the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Bill, 2006, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Amendment) Bill, 2009, the State Bank of India (Subsidiary Banks) Amendment Bill, 2009, and the Insurance Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2008.
