Kiran Bedi bans use of sirens by cars carrying VIPs in Puducherry

Bedi, the newly appointed Lt governor of the Union Territory, also directed that no special privileges would be accorded to cars of VIPs

Puducherry Lt Governor Kiren Bedi today banned use of sirens in cars of VIPs, which would also be applicable in escort and pilot vehicles of Raj Nivas.

However, emergency services like ambulances and fire service vehicles would be exempted from the restriction on use of sirens, a press release from the Secretary to Lt Governor Theva Needhi Das said.

The Lt Governor had also directed that no special privileges would be accorded for cars of VIPs such as stopping of traffic, so that people's right to freedom of movement is not hindered in any manner, it said.

The Lt Governor, the release said, had also directed that traffic police to also ensure that sufficient number of personnel are present for regulating traffic without halting it or inconveniencing commuters.
