As the Union government has sanctioned funds for group housing and slum development schemes, the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC) plans to utilise Rs 24.75 crore and build over 2000 houses to rehabilitate slum dwellers in various areas in the city.

Under the Union government's scheme, a beneficiary is expected to invest only 10 percent of the total cost of Rs 80,000 per house. Of the remaining amount, 70 percent will be borne by the Centre and 10 percent by the state. Each house will have a plinth area of 269 sq.ft.

According to KMC sources, the priority will be given to hutments located in the corporation limits.

The proposed slum development scheme includes both house construction and also infrastructure development.
