Congress today named G Parameshwara as president of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC). He succeeds R V Deshpande, who has completed his two year term. Congress president Sonia Gandhi, authorised by the state unit, finalised the name of Parameshwar in Delhi.
Parameshwar was elected as the MLA for the fourth time from Koratagere in Tumkur district. He belongs to the Dalit community. Unlike his predecessor, Parameshwar is expected to be a strong party chief with a large following of his own.
He holds PhD in Agricultural Science from Waite Agricultural Research Institute, University of Adelaide. He was also a fellow of the Indian Institute of Agricultural Technologists. He has served as minister from 1993. He was minister for sericulture from 1993 to 1994, minister for higher education, science and technology, medical education from 1999 to 2001 and minister for higher education and information from 2003 to 2004.
