Kumar Mangalam Advises Ximb Students To Look Beyond The Book

Chairman of Aditya Birla group Kumar Mangalam Birla has a few tips for the management students beyond the curriculum of an MBA course, which he thought, may come handy in equipping the budding managers to face the challenges of working life in a more pragmatic manner.

Encapsulated in six lessons, he espoused the ideas of building future managers of the corporate world during his address to the students of the Xavier Institute of Management on the occasion of the 12th annual convocation ceremony of the institute, here yesterday.

It is difficult to execute a plan while working in isolation, he said. A budding manager must learn to work in a team which helps to improve his quality of decision with various inputs. Therefore, he said, being team-spirited is critical to success in professional life.

 

Then exhorting the students to take care of details, Birla said, very often, it is noticed that attention is not given to minute details which helps in increasing the productivity and profitability of an organization.Stressing on cultural interaction, he said, in the present competitive global economy, one should learn to work across cultures. Respecting different culures and learning from them is a key ingredient of a good modern-day manager, he maintained.

Advising the students to use their gift of judgment, he said, intuition is another aspect of the personality which is hardly put to use. Sometimes, application of sixth sense while taking a decision can work wonders, he said.

He exhorted the future managers not to get disheartened by failures as it is the stepping stone of success. The management students should learn the holistic definition of success which different people interpret differently, he said.
