Kunjarani wins 1st gold for India at Melbourne

Kunjarani Devi won the first gold medal for India in the women's 48 kg weightlifting event - giving the country a glorious start at the 18th Commonwealth Games today.

Kunjarani, who was also the gold medallist at the previous Manchester games, lifted an overall 166 kg, which included 72 kg in snatch and 94 kg in clean and jerk category. In the process, she also created a new record in the clean and jerk category bettering her own mark of 92.5 kg in the 2002 games. (PTI)
