The state has approved the setting up of an ayurveda college in Kutch. The college would be set up under the Kutch Vidya Pratistan, an educational trust in the district. This will be the ninth ayurveda college in the state.

"A three-members team of the state medical department visited the place and gave the no-objection certificate to the college. We are planning to start the college from the coming academic year with a total strength of 100 students in the initial stage.

"The college will be affiliated to the Gujarat Ayurved University of Jamnagar," Mukesh Zaveri, chief co-ordinator of the project told Business Standard.

The total area of 15 acre in Bhuj near the Kutch University campus consists of a hospital and a botanical garden. The college will be named after Jai Krishna Indrajit, a renowned botanist from the district.

At present, Kutch Vidya Pratistan runs an ayurvedic hospital in the district. " We decided to set up a college to provide good facilities in the hospital. We also have plans to built a new building for the hospital," said Zaveri.

The trust also runs a commerce college in Nakhshatrana.

"Each year, many students go to other states to study. I think the new college will be beneficial to them," an official of the Ayurvedic University of Jamnagar said.

Initially, the college will enroll students only for one course in the Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) offered by the Gujarat Ayurved University.
