Concerned over the safety of labourers in the wake of the mishap at a metro site, Delhi Labour Department has sought details from the DMRC on the working conditions of workers at its various construction sites.

"We need to find all issues related to the safety of labourers and evacuation plan from DMRC to ensure that incidents like the ones that took place in Zamrudpur and Punjabi Bagh do not happen again," Delhi Labour Minister Mangat Ram Singhal said.

He said the DMRC has been asked to reply to 31 queries related to health and safety issues of construction workers by August 10.

"The queries do not mean that we are blaming the DMRC for its functioning as far as status of construction workers is concerned. But we need to find what steps it is taking when it comes to the safety of its workers," a senior official from the department said.

The DMRC has been asked to give details on issues related to checking and testing of the equipment and machinery deployed at the sites, occupational health hazards and stress among workers at its sites.

A total of six workers and an engineer had died at the metro construction sites at Zamrudpur and Punjabi Bagh recently.
