The Trinamul Congress, the state's main opposition party now on a high after successes in the recent panchayat elections, announced a 12 hour strike on June 6 at a press briefing on June 4 afternoon.

Earlier in the day, the ruling Left Front in West Bengal today said it would enforce a 12-hour, 6am to 6pm, general strike in the state and in Tripura on June 5 to protest the hike in oil prices.

Front chairman Biman Bose ducked questions on how a ruling group could enforce a bandh, and also how it could call a bandh when it was the largest group keeping the government in power. The Opposition Trinamul Congress leader Mamata Banerjee termed the Left move a "joke" but reserved her right to call a 12-hour general strike as early as June 6.
