The Left parties yesterday asked Janata Dal president Sharad Yadav to step down from his position following a Delhi court's decision to charge him in the Jain hawala case.

The CPI(M) politburo said, 'in the light of the court decision it would be better for Sharad Yadav to make an interim arrangement to handover charge of the presidentship of his party till he is cleared of the charges.'

The statement said among the political leaders and public servants chargesheeted in the case, the only exception was of Yadav who had admitted to receiving Rs 3 laks for his party.

But 15 other politicians, who had allegedly received large amounts, had been discharged on the basis of the judgement of the single bench of Delhi high court.

The Delhi High Court judgement was a flawed one and all those involved should be proceeded against, it said.

CPI national secretary D Raja said his party had been clear and consistent in its stand that those allegedly involved in corruption should not hold public offices. He said the Janata Dal should take an 'appropriate' decision which would uphold values in public life.

Yadav, on the other hand, decided to file an appeal in the Delhi High Court against the trial court order to frame charges against him.

'The appeal is being prepared and would be filed in the high court in a couple of days,' Yadav's counsel AK Vajpayee said told news agenc yesterday.
