The state government will allow more liquor shops in the state and increase the concentration of 'one shop for every 1,500 population'.

This was revealed by the Minister for excise and sericulture Chennigappa to reporters in Dharwad on Friday.

The minister said that this will prevent consumption of spurious liquor besides enhancing revenue to the government.

When asked if the government will persist on opening a liquor shop in a village if the gram panchayat of that village passes a resolution against it, Chennigappa initially said that the decision of a few members of the panchayat was not a reflection of villagers' opinion. He said that the revenue had gone up by 48 per cent in August this year.
