The provisional population statistics released by Haryana census department today have shown an inverse relationship between sex ratio and literacy rate in the state.
As per the statistics released by the state census department, the sex ratio (females per 1000 males) for the state has moved up to 877 (as against 861 in 2001) and the child sex ratio (0-6 years) has also improved to 830 from 819 in the 2001 census. However, the trend does not co-relate with literacy rate that has moved up to 76.64 per cent from 67.91 per cent in the last census.
While districts like Mewat, Fatehabad and Palwal which are low on literacy rate have shown a considerable improvement in the sex ratio and child sex ratio — districts high on literacy rates have failed to rise with the education.
Out of 21 districts in Haryana, 20 districts of Haryana are below 880 (national average) in child sex ratio while Mewat is the only district higher at 903. Mewat which has the lowest literacy rate of 56.1 per cent in the state as against state literacy rate of 76.64 per cent in 2011 also has the highest sex ratio (906) followed by Fatehabad (903). Fatehabad incidentally also has a literacy rate of 69.1 per cent, less when compared to state average.
While districts like Jhajhar (80.8 per cent), Mahendargarh (78.9 per cent), Rewari (82.2 per cent), Bhiwani (76.7 per cent) and Faridabad (83.0 per cent) all have literacy rates higher than state average — all these districts have recorded lower child sex ratio than 2001.
