Long-distance Internet telephony on the cards

 In a consultation paper on formulating an integrated policy for accelerating the growth of Internet and broadband penetration within a unified regime, Trai has listed a number of measures, including promoting cheap Internet access devices, reducing infrastructure costs, finding ways to reduce lease line costs, allowing ISPs to get support from the universal services obligation fund, reducing costs because of duties and taxation and promoting local content.

 Amitabh Singhal, secretary, Internet Services Providers Association of India said,
