All retail outlets in the National Capital Region (NCR) and Kolkata Municipal Corporation area have been directed to sell from today diesel with a maximum 0.05 per cent sulphur contents.

The low-sulphur diesel will cost about 50 paise a litre more in Kolkata and about 49 to 54 paise a litre more in NCR over the normal grade diesel.

According to an official press release, the higher price for this low-sulphur environment-friendly diesel is because its manufacture requires changes in the refining process involving high investment.

The world over, the price of this grade of diesel carry a premium over normal grades of diesel, the release says.

The Supreme Court had directed the government to make available 0.05 per cent sulphur diesel in the entire NCR by June 30.
