Maharashtra BJP on Wednesday demanded a Rs 10,000 crore package for the drought-hit region in the state.

Addressing a press conference, Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council Vinod Tawade demanded to set up a Joint Legislative Committee to monitor whether the package allotted to the drought-hit region reaches the needy. "The state government should announce a package of Rs 10,000 crore for the 102 talukas, where less than 50 per cent of sowing has been done so far," he demanded.

Tawade alleged that the Karnataka government took away their share from the Central government to tackle drought in their state, when the ruling parties in Maharashtra (Congress and NCP) were busy in the stand-off.

"They (Congress-NCP) were engaged in ego-clashes, when the Karnataka government took away their share to tackle drought in their state," he said.

Urging the government to start taking intensive measures to tackle the drought, he added that the Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, who held a meeting with the Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan over the issue of drought, should make efforts to provide adequate package to the state.

"He (Pawar) should not just make his presence felt (by attending meetings), but should make efforts so that Maharashtra gets sufficient package from the Central government to tackle the drought," he added.
