Maha govt seeks wider loan waiver scheme

With the loan waiver scheme unlikely to benefit most of the farmers in Vidarbha, Maharashtra today suggested its scope be widened to include dry land farmers owning land upto 10 hectares.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, who met Congress President Sonia Gandhi, also wanted waiver of farmers' loans upto Rs 50,000 irrespective of the land holding.

Gandhi assured him that she would take up the matter with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Finance Minister P Chidambaram.

Deshmukh said the no other issue came up for discussion with Gandhi.
