The Maharashtra government has sent a proposal to the central government asking it fix onion prices on the lines of wheat, jawar and corn.

Talking to newspersons last evening, state marketing minister Harshvardhan Patil said farmers have been suffering losses following declining prices of onion, and the government was thinking of providing financial assistance to them.

The centre has granted funds of Rs 15 crore to Maharashtra for setting up onion-chawls (storage-place), and the government has to spend the amount before March 31 this year, he added.
