Replying to a question about the PG medical seats, Higher and Technical Education Minister Dilip Walse-Patil informed the Legislative Council that the government wants to increase the PG seats.

A total of 214 PG seats were curtailed by the MCI for lack of infrastructure this year. But they were later restored, the Minister said.

The state is trying to shore up adequate infrastructure for those restored seats and only then will think of starting with new seats, he added.

The MCI has very tough norms for the approval of seats and the government has demanded their relaxation, Walse-Patil said.

Currently, there are 1,025 PG seats in the state. After 214 seats were curtailed in May, medical students held demonstrations demanding they be restored.
