The Maharashtra government will set up a specialised technology university for engineering, pharmacy, architecture, MBA, MCA and hotel management and catering. The proposed varsity will be located either in Mumbai or Pune and accommodate nearly 800 institutes and 6 lakh students for a full course. They are currently affiliated to 10 separate universities in the state.
With this, Maharashtra will jump on the bandwagon of technology universities in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. The state cabinet is expected to give its approval for the varsity on Wednesday.
“The idea is to have a uniform syllabus in the proposed university, instead of the different curriculum prevalent in the 800 institutes. The objective is to bring in more professional and innovative approach and focused research in emerging areas,” the minister for higher and technical education Rajesh Tope told Business Standard. He added that an initial allocation of Rs 100 crore is proposed.
The minister said the government intends to rope in representatives from industry and businesses on the board of studies of the technology varsity for an curriculum as per market needs.
