Maharashtra has issued a government resolution (GR) on the imposition of entertainment tax on Indian Premier League (IPL) matches.

The government has proposed a 25 per cent entertainment tax on matches played within the municipal corporation limits, 15 per cent within municipal council limits and 10 per cent in rural areas. The proposed tax would be imposed during the next season of the IPL. The state cabinet at its recent meeting gave its consent for the same.

The government would make a submission in this regard on Tuesday before the Bombay High Court which would restart hearing on a writ petition filed by the Shiv Sena. The high court during its hearing in April had directed the state government to make its stand clear on this issue. State government sources confirmed that it had already issued the GR.

Shiv Sena had approached the high court, holding the state government responsible for loss of revenue for not imposing entertainment tax on IPL matches. Even though the state cabinet had decided to impose entertainment tax on IPL matches in January, it could not be enforced due to internal wrangling between the ruling Congress and NCP.
