Science in school has historically been associated with boring classes being taught by a boring lot of teachers. But, there have been continual efforts to kindle interest among the students.
BrainStars, an organisation that seeks to foster and nurture the movement of ‘Science Education’ in India, is aiming to act as the bridge between the formal education sector and innovative educational research.
It aims at providing academic leadership in school education as well as improving the quality of education provided in primary and secondary schools in the state. This is through productising their ideas.The firm had implemented a project under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan (SSA) where they were allowed by the state government’s Department of State Educational Research and Training or DSERT, the academic wing of the Department of Public Instruction to offer its product, the Infinity Kit in rural schools in north Karnataka, in Raichur. The Infinity Kit is a mathematics kit for students of standards I to X which aids the students’ Maths learning. The company offers both services and products. And, Infinity Kit is the first of the company and costs about Rs 15,000 for an individual buyer..
While the firm has many services under its belt, STARS is the flagship product of the company which aims to provide opportunity for the young minds to unleash their abilities. It’s a systematic training provided for the young towards developing scientific temper and an approach to learn science and maths through hands-on activities. STARS programme targets at improving the 5Cs of scientific temper — curiosity, clarity, competence, connectivity and communication.
“We study the demands and conditions of contemporary science education in school, college, professional science education, community science literacy and government policies. Based on our study, we create educational programmes, services and tools that significantly address and fulfill the science education challenges in any environment,” said Sriraghavan S M, president (education & collaborations), BrainStars.
Ravi Shankar R, CEO & CRO, Brainstars, said the firm aims to raise about Rs 5 crore. But, this would happen only after the company has attained a critical mass and makes its presence felt.
