The second phase of the Malpe Fishing Port in Udupi district was inaugurated by Oscar Fernandes, the local MP and general secretary of the AICC(I), last week.
This development work was taken up at a cost of Rs 21.60 crore as a joint venture between the state and the central governments. The state has already released Rs 12.70 crore where as the centre released Rs 5.98 crore so far and is yet to release Rs 4.82 crore.
With this, the Malpe fishing port has become the best all weather fishing port in the country. The third phase of the development of the port is under consideration.

The initial estimate of the second phase of the development of the port was Rs 11.96 crore in 1997 when it was technically sanctioned. A dock of 540 meters length and a jetty of 420 meters were part of the second phase work.
During 2000-03, the state sanctioned Rs 30 lakh under a special grant for the development of the port. Oscar Fernandes released Rs 7.93 lakh for the construction of toilets in the Port from the MP
