With an aim to better its freight handling operation, Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee today announced 'faster parcel service' on three routes connecting the metros with "guaranteed transit time".

In her budget speech, she said the services will be launched as a premium parcel service connecting Tughalakabad to Royapuram (Chennai), Vapi (near Mumbai) and Howrah.

"The services is envisaged as a time table service for dedicated terminals with guaranteed transit time an web-based bookings," she said.

Interestingly, a month back Northern Railway had also announced to run such a service called "Teevra Gati Sewa" Superfast Parcel Train service, connecting Tughalakabad to Royapauram and Vapi.

The first service was to be flagged off on June 1 for Royapuram and on June 4 for Vapi. But the services were cancelled at the last moment, belying many a expectations.

However, Banerjee has put it back on tracks in her budget speech and has added one more service from Tughalakabad to Howrah.

Though the Minister has not elaborated about the service in her speech, sources in Northern Railway said customers will get refund if the trains are running behind schedule.
