Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati today launched 264 public welfare schemes worth Rs 7,312 crore to mark her 54th birthday.
These schemes relate to infrastructure, power, housing, education and health sectors. Her birthday is being celebrated as ‘Jan Kalyan Diwas’ all over the state.
She also launched a new scheme ‘UP Mukhya Mantri Mahamaya Garib Arthik Madad Yojana’, which entitles those Below Poverty Line (BPL) to a monthly handout of Rs 300, who are not getting any other government-sponsored social incentive.
“We have created a cell in the CM secretariat to oversee the successful implementation of this scheme and it will materialise in the next 6-7 months after the list of all the beneficiaries is prepared,” she said addressing the media on the occasion.
Mayawati slammed the Congress-led government at the Centre for neglecting her long-pending demand of a special economic package worth Rs 80,000 crore for the development of backward districts.

“I have met the prime minister several times in connection with our demand for the special package, however it has not fetched a single rupee to the government,” she lamented.
Mayawati said her government cut other expenses to launch the welfare schemes.
The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president also unveiled the English and Hindi editions of her book ‘A travelogue of my struggle-ridden life and BSP movement, Volume 5’ at her birthday ceremony.
