Adding her bit to the political turmoil in the Telangana region, Uttar Pradesh chief minister and BSP supremo Mayawati today announced her support to the demand for a separate statehood, adding that only a dalit would become the chief minister if a new state was carved out of Andhra Pradesh.

“Uplift of the downtrodden sections (bahujan) in this region is possible only with the achievement of a separate statehood for Telangana,” she said while addressing a training camp attended by around 3,000 party followers.

Her visit to Hyderabad to revive the party’s prospects comes after a prolonged lull in BSP activities in the state, where neither a state committee nor a structure for her party exists. The lone BSP MLA who got elected in the last elections had also been suspended for anti-party activities in the past.

Accused the UPA and BJP of the prevailing uncertainty over the issue of Telangana, Mayawati said her party had been supporting the formation of smaller states as in the case of Uttarakhand. Moreover, B R Amdekar also favoured the creation of smaller states, she said.

The UP chief minister said she was not afraid of political harassment and would not surrender under any pressure, let alone the CBI cases. “I am confident I would get justice in Supreme Court,” she said.

She asked her cadre to work for the cause of poor and downtrodden sections while saying the BSP would emerge as a major force in future in Telangana region.
