Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati today welcomed the suo motu cognisance of the Ramlila ground incident by Supreme Court and issuance of notices.

Delhi Police and other security personnel had forcibly evicted the ground of peaceful protesters, who had assembled there at the call given by yoga guru Baba Ramdev against black money in the early hours yesterday. The security personnel lobbed teargas shells and used force to disperse the crowd. Mayawati said the initiative taken by SC would ensure there was no repeat of such ‘inhuman and suppressive’ action in future against people holding peaceful demonstrations.

She had requested the SC to institute an inquiry or a a judicial probe into the matter.
