The Medical Council of India has given approval to more than 2,000 additional seats for PG courses in medicine from this year.
While the proposal to increase 1,000 PG seats has already got clearance of the Union Health Ministry, more than 1,000 more are expected to get clearance by February 28, MCI President Ketan Desai said.
The regulatory body had received applications from 45 medical colleges from 12 states for increasing their PG intake.
The expansion comes as part of the new government formula to expand the number of PG seats, which allows every college to get two PG seats for every professor it has.
Earlier, only one seat per professor was allowed.
