The CWC urged the Gowda government not to pursue the decision and directed the Congress Parliamentary party to to act according to the CWC resolution in case the government came up with the Bill in Parliament.
The resolution said that the Act was brought in force to provide safety and pretection to genuine Indian citizens, specially the linguistic and religious minorities from the police and other authorities. The aim was to detect, identify and deport illegal migrants through a judicial process by establishing a tribunal prisided by a district judge level judicial officer. The Act, the resolution said, got support from various sections of Assam like the All Assam Students Union as it formed part of the Assam Accord that brought peace in the State.
The CWC warned that repealing the Act would have serious consequences by reversing the process of communal and ethnic harmoney among various section of the Assamese society.
Besides, it would ammount to abject surrender to the pressures of the BJP.
