The mentor group constituted to restore the glory of Presidency University, headed by eminent Harvard Professor Sugata Bose on Thursday submitted its report to the West Bengal government recommending a special status for the institute.
“We are happy to submit the report within a period of two months. We think Presidency University should remain a state university with aspecial status. We have made all recommendation so that it can truly be the epicenter of excellence,” Bose said after handing over the report to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Formation of a separate selection committee comprising renowned people on the subject for the appointment of faculty members, reorganisation of botany, biology, and biotechnology departments to bring under one umbrella --- are some of the recommendations made in the 27 page report.
“I think all these are valid recommendation. I have asked the education ministry to take decisions about the implementation of these as soon as possible,” chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said.
The 10-member mentor group, with Nobel laureate economist Amartya Sen as the advisor, was set up by the Mamata Banerjee group in the month of June to propose amendments to the Presidency University Act to regain its excellence.
