Mineral production up 9.5% in June

Production of minerals in the country was down by 1.62 per cent in June this year, but the value of the raw materials rose by 9.5 per cent in comparison to the corresponding period of the previous year, the government said today.

Mineral output in the country was valued at Rs 11,253 crore in June, 9.5 per cent higher than the corresponding period of the previous year, an official statement from the Mines Ministry said.

"The total value of mineral production (excluding atomic and minor minerals) in the country during June, 2010, was Rs 11,253 crore," the statement said.

Production in June, however, was lower by 1.62 per cent in the month compared to May, 2010.

Coal accounted for 34 per cent of the total value of mined minerals at Rs 3,793 crore, while the value of iron ore mined in June was pegged at Es 3,176 crore and crude petroleum another Rs 1,637 crore.

The value of natural gas, lignite and limestone extracted in June was Rs 1,368 crore, Rs 372 crore and Rs 264 crore, respectively.

"These six minerals together contributed about 94 per cent of the total value of mineral production in June, 2010," the statement said.

In terms of production, coal output stood at 411 lakh tonnes, lignite at 33 lakh tonnes, natural gas (utilised) at 4,370 million cubic metres and petroleum (crude) at 29 lakh tonnes.

In June, the output of diamonds increased by 86.95 per cent to 5,646 carats, compared to the previous month, while gold production increased by 1.56 per cent to 156 kg.
