Senior BJP leader and minister for higher education Dr V S Acharya accused the disgruntled mining magnates in the state of funding the opposition parties to destabilise the BJP government in the state.
Speaking to reporters in Dharwad on Friday, he said the owners of mining companies who have been affected by state government’s decision to ban export of iron ore had been spending huge amounts of money to destabilise the Yeddyurappa-led BJP government in the state. He said, mine owners who tried to topple the government by funding the attempts did not belong to the BJP.
The minister accused the governor of violating the provisions of the Constitution by giving directions to the Speaker on how to conduct the proceedings during the trust vote on October 11. “The governor, for reasons best known to him, has acted in a manner unbecoming of his position,” Acharya charged. When asked what prompted the governor to give a second chance to chief minister Yeddyurappa to prove his majority, Acharya said the UPA Cabinet Committee must have asked him to mend his ways. On the prospects of 11 MLAs from the BJP who have been disqualified, Acharya expressed confidence that the high court would uphold the decision of the Speaker on the matter.
Admitting that the political developments in the past few days had tarnished the image of politicians further and the people were fed up he blamed the Opposition parties for the fiasco and asserted that the opposition parties had played into the hands of vested interests. He termed the BJP government’s win during the trust vote as victory of democracy and BJP.
On his priorities as minister for higher education, he said he was for enhancing the quality of education imparted by the universities. The teachers should put all their talent, energy and time towards helping students by raising the quality of teaching and research work, he added.
