The Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were virtually decimated in Uttar Pradesh by-elections, netting barely 2,000 votes each, proving that national parties would have to pay for ignoring smaller, region- and caste-based parties.

The Mulayam Singh Yadav led Samajwadi Party won the two Assembly by-elections held by the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), marking a significant turn in the state politics.

In Bihar, there was no change. The Laloo Prasad Yadav-led Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) retained the Barachatti and Fatuah Assembly constituencies, while the Sitamarhi seat was retained by the BJP candidate Sunil Kumar.

The Harora Assembly seat was vacated by former UP Chief Minister Mayawati, who resigned after Mulayam Singh Yadav became the chief minister. By-elections were held on 20 November.

The Mahsi by-election was caused by the death of the BSP legislator. The BSP nominated the widow of the MLA, who lost, indicating that a wind for change was blowing over UP.

The news for the BJP was not good. It got just 2,900 votes in Harora where, Samajwadi Party candidate Vimal Rakesh polled 84,837 votes over BSP
