Modi invites Sistema to set up chip facility in Gujarat

Expressing his intentions of developing the telecommunication sector in Gujarat, Chief Minister Narendra Modi has invited Russian telecommunication company Sistema to set up an IT chip and SIM card manufacturing facility in the state.

Modi, who is in Russia to attend a two-day seminar on energy, also enquired about the possibilities of technology transfer of Sistema’s disaster management equipment and coast guard marine telecommunication. Speaking at the ‘International Energy Week Conference’ in Moscow, Modi also expressed his desire to make Gujarat a prominent player in oil and gas economy, a government release stated. Sistema Telecom manages the companies in the telecommunications business, including MTS, Comstar, MGTS, Sky Link, Sistema Shyam TeleServices Ltd.

 

Earlier, the chief minister decided to call off his scheduled visit to Oman amid protests by civil rights activists in the Gulf country against Modi’s decision to visit their country and a recent clarification by the Oman embassy in New Delhi through a newspaper advertisement.
