In a bid to hasten economic development, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today hinted at further opening up of the manufacturing sector and asked NRIs to pump in more investments into the country.

"Manufacturing should be liberalised even domestically to create a more enabling enviornment. The Indian economy is open for participation, and there are enoromous opportunities to invest today," he said at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit.

"There are enormous opportunities in the areas of manufacturing and other new hi-tech areas. I invite NRIs to take advantage of the opportunities in the horizon," he said.

Concerned over the rural-urban divide, he said," the rural-urban divide is a serious concern of the future of our polity. Per capita gap between rural and urban areas has widened. For the success of democracy, we need to arrest this," he said.
