The 2005 edition of Dasara festival commencing next month in Mysore is expected to cost Rs 2 crore, Rs 10 lakh more than it cost last year.

The State Government has sanctioned Rs 75 lakh for organising Dasara, while the organising officials have sought an additional Rs 75 lakh government support. The rest is proposed to be mobilised from programme sponsors.

The maiden programme - arrival of the elephants from their abode in the forests - was completed early this week.

Half a dozen jumbos, including the howdah-carrier Balarama, received traditional royal welcome as they marched into the main Palace from its majestic main entrance.

District minister Tanvir Sait, MLC Manjunath, mayor Bharati and officials were present as the decorated six elephants - four male and two female - marched in a row to the accompanying police band music.

In all, a dozen elephants will take part in this year's Dasara, except Arjuna, who will miss his attendance this time.

Meanwhile, the heritage structure on the centuries' old royal grounds has hit headlines, controversy catching up over a three-foot high gallery raising its head on the beautifully laid-out lawn.

The gallery is intended to accommodate spectators for watching the light and sound programme to be launched during the festivities.

Bharatiya Janata Party workers and activisits held demonstration in the city against the 'ugly structure that mars the splendour of the grand edifice'.
