 In many Assembly constituencies in the Budlekhand region that borders Uttar Pradesh and has the same social complexion and caste tensions, the SP upset the Congress calculation.

 Though the party received only four per cent of votes, it won seven seats to become the third largest party in the 230-member MP Assembly.

 This shows that in the constituencies from where SP candidates had won, the voting in their favour was intense and concentrated.

 It also suggests that though the five per cent Muslims in the state cannot make much impact in terms of political polarisation, the minority community could vote en bloc to the political alternative to the Congress where Muslim votes matter.
