Several programmes were organised in the city today to mark the first anniversary of the July 26 deluge last year, which had caused unprecedented destruction of life and property.

School children formed a human chain and displayed banners outside Churchgate railway station demanding action to prevent another such tragedy in the future.

Emphasising the need for a clean, safe and modern Mumbai, the students submitted a plaque, bearing solutions for a better city, to Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh.

The BJP's city unit organised a function on the banks of Mithi river in Kurla area to pay tribute to the more than 450 people killed in the deluge.

A silent march was organised by school children from Children Welfare Centre High School grounds to Panch Marg in Versova area to remember the victims.
