"We have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the firm to manage Baga to Siquerim (North) and Velsao to Benaulim (South) beach belts," state Tourism Minister Francisco Pacheco told reporters here.

Mumbai-based Drishti Adventure Sports Pvt Ltd has been contracted the job for five years to manage these beaches.

Pacheco said that the state, which is plagued with the drowning deaths, is working overtime to arrest such instances.

The figures reveal that the state's 105-km-long beach stretch witnessed 46 deaths due to drowning in the year 2004, 22 in 2005, 44 in 2006, 72 in 2007 and till date 35 deaths this year.

Arrivals of foreign tourists to the state have declined marginally since February 18 when the body of British teenager Scarlett Keeling was found on Anjuna beach.

Police said she had been drugged and allegedly raped before being left to drown in the high tide.
