Mumbai, Jan 26 (PTI) Republic Day celebrations were held across the city with patriotic fervour, enthusiasm and unfurling of national flag amidst tight security arrangements. Maharashtra Governor K Sankaranarayanan took salute of an impressive parade by security forces and unfurled the tri-colour at Shivaji Park ground at Dadar in cental Mumbai.
Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal, Mumbai Mayor Shradhha Jadhav, several ministers, senior policemen and bureaucrats were present at the event.
On the occassion, the governor said that the government is committted to inclusive and all-round development of the state and its people.
"The government is committed to achieving self-sufficiency in power by 2012. With new public and private generation projects coming up and rapid improvements taking in distriution efficiency, the state will have adequate power to meet all its agricultural, industrial and household needs by 2012," he said.
To tackle the threats of terrorism and Naxalism in the state, the police force was being modernised and the security infrastructure was being strengthened, he added.
In order to insulate the common man from the effects of inflation, the government has decided to regulate the prices of five essential commodities namely weat, rice, Tur Dal, sugar and palm oil through public distribution system, he said.
