He feels Mysore is ideally suited for agriculture-based growth, both in industry and trade. It has good prospects for food processing and food related industries. Foodgrains and vegetables are cultivated in and around the district in sufficient quantities.
In fact, the local traders are sending out large quantities of vegetables to neighbouring Kerala almost daily. Similarly, it is suited for popularising floriculture.
"There is a very good market abroad for flowers. Bangalore has achieved a good export market in flowers. Flowers are airlifted from Bangalore and made available in Saudi Arabia and other countries the next day. Similarly, Mysore too can develop a good export market," he told Business Standard.
He agrees that infrastructure needs to be developed. He suggests adequate cold storage facility for horticulture and floricultre. Small cold storage plants in taluk headquarters would help farmers preserve their products and help improve their conditions, Vijayashankar says.
