With main mediators between the UPA government and the Left "" External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee and CPI(M) MP Sitaram Yechury "" in Australia and London, respectively, the political action seems to have shifted to Chennai.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK leader M Karunanidhi has offered to mediate between the two and would be travelling to Delhi in the middle of next week. CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat and CPI National Secretary D Raja have called upon the veteran leader to discuss the issue with him.

Addressing a public meeting in Chennai late last night, Karunanidhi said: "We have a duty to resolve the differences between the Congress and Left parties on the issue in the interest of the nation. I will be meeting the Left leaders here and would go to New Delhi soon to find an amicable solution to the entire issue."

The DMK chief, who had played a significant role in bringing the Congress and the Left to negotiating table on the nuclear issue last year also, appealed to all secular parties not to allow communal forces to gain an upper hand. He also said if such forces come to power, issues like construction of a Ram temple at Ayodhya would crop up again. Yesterday, Raja apprised Karunanidhi of the Left stand on the Indo-US nuclear deal.
