The Indian Navy is doing its bit in charting the elusive course of the monsoon. Two hydrographic vessels have been pressed into service by the Navy to participate in the Arabian Sea Monsoon Experiment (Armex) being conducted by the department of science and technology.

Two vessels -- INS Sarvekshak and INS Jamuna were being used to study the genesis, intensification and propagation of convective systems over the Arabian Sea leading to the monsoon rains along the western coast and the dynamics of these factors in relation to the monsoon, a Navy press release said here today.

Since June 15, the two ships have been sailing across the Arabian Sea, collecting meteorological and oceanographic data considered to be crucial for monsoon profiling.

In addition, two Naval air stations located along the western coast were collecting surface meteorological data and scanning the characteristics of the troposphere, or the layer of the atmosphere closest to the earth
