Only 70 per cent of the total mobile subscriber base of 851.7 million was active as of the end of June this year. According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai), active subscribers on the date of peak VLR (visitor location register, measuring subscriber use) for June was 594.8 mn. The figure does not include the CDMA VLR figure of Bharat Sanchar Nigam.
Jammu & Kashmir had the highest proportion (figures in percentage) by VLR, at 80.4, followed by Assam with 76.8 and Maharashtra with 74.5. Mumbai had the lowest VLR percentage, 57.4. Among service providers, Idea led with 92.5, followed by Bharti with 88.8 per cent.
On mobile number portability, Trai said 12.98 million subscribers gave requests to different service providers. Around 763,000 came from Haryana, wherein MNP was implemented from November last year, well ahead of elsewhere. In the rest of the country, the highest number of requests came in Gujarat, at 1.3 million, followed by Maharashtra with 1.03 million and Karnataka with 983,000.
The number of telephone subscribers in India increased to 886 million at the end of June, from 874.7 millionat the end of May, a growth rate of 1.3 per cent.
