The Tamil Nadu government is planning to add a few more lines to the Chennai Metro Rail. Under the second phase, a project study would be undertaken on establishing new lines linking Moolakkadai - Thirumangalam, Moolakkadai - Thiruvanmiyur and Luz – Poonamallee via Ayyapanthangal.

Recently, the government has said that it would extend metro up to Thiruvottriyur at an estimated cost of Rs 3,001 crore. The project cost, originally envisaged to be Rs 14,600 crore, is now expected to touch Rs 18,000 crore.

The extension of the 45 km-long metro rail project is being done with the financial assistance from Japan International Cooperation Agency and the central government.

The state government is implementing Chennai Metro Rail Project, the state’s largest infrastructure project, to bring down the commuting time and to ease the traffic in the city.

The project is expected to reduce commute time by 75 percent from one end of the city to another. Currently, the average bus speed in the city is around 17-18 km per hour. With the increasing traffic over the next five years, it is expected to come down to 12 km per hour.

The will be first metro project in the country to be integrated with other modes of public transportation, according to officials.
