The Surat Diamond Association (SDA) is likely to find a place in the record books for collecting 20,000-plus blood units in a single day.

At a mega blood donation camp organised on Saturday, the SDA collected 20,022 blood units.

The world record for the maximum number of units collected in a single day stands at 12002 blood units. This record was set by a Mumbai-based organisation.

SDA president Nanu Vanani, said: "We were always confident that we would be able to create a new world record. Our confidence was strengthened by the enthusiasm shown by the donors. We would like to thank each and very person who helped us set the new record."

SDA had roped in 47 blood banks from all over the state to collect the blood. Over 200 doctors, 300 teachers and 500 volunteers offered their services at the camp.

SDA will shortly inform the Guinness Record authorities about the feat and hopes to find a place in the record books.
