The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is contemplating to move court for a directive to the West Bengal government for complying with its suggestions and recommendations on violations at Nandigram.

"Since we do not have the power for initiating any penal action, we can only move court for its directive to the state government asking it to comply with our suggestions and recommendations on the Nandigram issue," NHRC Chairman Justice S Rajendra Babu said here today on the sidelines of a workshop.

Regretting that the state government had not responded to the suggestions and recommendations as yet, Babu said NHRC Secretary General Akhil Kumar Jain will shortly meet Chief Secretary A K Deb to ascertain the government's stand.

"The full bench of the Commission will then decide in a meeting whether we will move court and how," he said.

Another option for the Commission is to apprise the people of its suggestions and recommendations to the state government and its reaction to it.

"Let the people realise the situation and think about their government," he said.

Nandigram in East Midnapore district was rocked by violence on the issue of acquisition of land for a chemical hub last year, which claimed several lives.

Stating that right to property was not included in the Fundamental Rights, the NHRC Chairman said if the people were deprived of right to shelter and right to work and became unemployed and homeless because of acquisition of land, it will amount to violation of human rights.
