The Noorul Islam (NI) group of educational institutions, which runs a host of higher education centres in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, has lined up plans to establish an R&D centre for nanotechnology at its campus at Kumaracoil, in Tamil Nadu's Kanyakumari district.

According to Faizal Khan, managing director, and Shabnam Shabeer, director of the group, "Our foray into the emerging area of nanotechnology will come about in such a way that we would initially be offering a course in nanotechnology. The proposal is currently being scrutinised by the University Grants Commission (UGC), and we expect to start offering the course in a couple of months. We are also in the process of being accorded a deemed university status."
