Nilekani to address PDS reform concerns

Nandan Nilekan, chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) i is expected to make a presentation to state food ministers on the benefits of a modernised public distribution system (PDS) and how Aadhar numbers can help in this modernisation, during a two-day conference starting on Wednesday.

Officials said Nilekani’s presence along with that of finance minister Pranab Mukherjee, agriculture minister Sharad Pawar and officials from the Planning Commission show the work of integrating the biometric ration card project of the food ministry with Aadhar is on.

The conference is also expected to discuss other issues related to modernisation of the PDS. The food ministry has sought allocation of Rs 4,000 crore from the Planning Commission to undertake end-to-end modernisation of the PDS.

 

The conference is expected to discuss issues such as procurement of foodgrains and improvement in storage capacity.
